June 30, 2012 marked the 116th anniversary of the day First State Bank & Trust Co. opened its doors for the first time. Founded in 1896, First State Bank has served generations of Kansas families. To put this timeframe into perspective, the state of Kansas itself was founded in 1861, so Kansans only had to wait thirty-five years for First State Bank to come along.
A few notable events taking place in Kansas at the time of our founding:
For K-State fans-
- K-State’s first official football game was held in 1896.
- The Kansas State Collegian, the daily student newspaper, was first published in 1896.
For KU fans-
- The University of Kansas Graduate School was organized in 1896.
- The first official collegiate basketball game was played in 1896 (not by KU), and two years later the inventor of basketball, James Naismith, came to KU to start their basketball program.
